A lot of people have been talking about Hank Green's website 'Read it First' (It's not online yet, simply in the works) and since it's something right up my alley I thought I give my two cents.
Firstly, I'd like to explain the website, despite it's self-explanatory-ness. It's basically whereby you take an oath to always read the book before seeing the movie.
Like Jesse (CodedLockFilms) and Matt (bandgeek8408) I actually hate this idea. (And I stole this topic from them, thanks boys!)
Right here, right now I can list five classic movies based on books that were terrible. And you know what, I wouldn't even have to think about it. As Jesse said, there's no difference between books be spoiled by movies and movies being spoiled by books.
Movies have the potential to be as thought provoking, inspiring, well done and interesting as books.
I think that people are certainly better trained in writing good books, than in making good movies. But you have to remember that books and stories have been around forever.
Movies are a more advanced form of storytelling, and a really great one. They deserve to be taken as seriously as books, and as an author and avid-reader, I can't support this website.
Sorry Hank, you know I love you, but I just can't.
And since I know you'll ask, those five movies are:
Jaws
Jaws
The Godfather
Forest Gump
Schindler's List
The Wizard of Oz
